To be honest it still makes me feel uncomfortable writing such a statement, perhaps the years of internalised weight bias that flowed through my veins in my 20s.
It’s like a phenomenon now that many fear, the belief that fatness is less superior, less attractive, less worthy, getting the ick using the word, when in reality it shows nothing about anyone’s health, wellbeing, physical or mental status.
Yet the dieting industry pray on it, because they know many feel vulnerable around it, again, the universal experience of severe internalised weight bias, you’ve been led to believe that fatness is inherently bad, so you will embark on ANYTHING to avoid it.
Like shotting apple cider vinegar so it would seem.
👀
The latest trend to hit the media:
“Cortisol is making you fat”
And subsequently a myriad of ludicrous methods to “combat cortisol fat gain”
Like shotting le vinegar.
Are we in a marvel universe?
I bark on a lot about the simplicity of fat loss, how it’s much deeper than calories in vs calories out. But in this instance, we can revert back to simplicity.
The only way you can gain weight is a calorie surplus.
Cortisol doesn’t directly cause weight gain.
And high levels of cortisol are not balanced by shotting ACV
In fact, unless you want rotting teeth, I’d avoid shotting it.
Cortisol CAN cause weight gain but not because of cortisol.
Much like the menopause, menopause doesn’t DIRECTLY cause weight gain, but weight gain CAN occur during this time.
Simply blaming hormones for weight gain is reductive and false.
Not only that it’s disempowering.
Women have been conditioned for years to believe they are more inferior to men.
Have been taught to believe their worth lies in what they do, how they look.
And then to have claims blaming functions of women’s bodies for weight gain, what is that doing for body image? What is that doing for embodiment? Self confidence?
Fuck all friends.
I know you reading this are invested in the complete understanding of our bodies, the real change, away from diet culture, I know you’re coming away from the fads, the yo-yo, all or nothing, and I know the claims of cortisol have somehow made it into your environment, so to support you, to give you the CORRECT information on cortisol and how it can impact body composition I have a new podcast episode out, in which we detail what cortisol is, how it supports the body, and the impacts of too much cortisol.
