I'm doing the ZOE diet!!! šŸ‘€

The Zoe Diet - A personalised Nutrition programme founded by Professor Tim Spector that's focused on metabolic health, by scare mongering people into managing blood sugar levels and sending off poo samples to manage their health and effectively lose weight šŸ„±

I met one of my best friends last Saturday evening, it was simply wholesome, and we got chatting, being in the same industry we can find mutual ground on topics fairly easily and as our partners alluded to ā€œlose ourselves in hours of conversationsā€

We were chatting about the Zoe diet, having had an advert pop up on my Facebook from Steven Bartlett bopping the device on his arm and confirming it changed his lifeā€¦

Questionable when on a recent episode of the Diary of a CEO he mentioned he felt ā€œhopeless when in a service station as he couldnā€™t eat anything DESPITE being hungry because of his Blood Sugarsā€

Has that really changed your life?Or is it yet again, another masked up disordered eating method sold to millions of people?

Making choices based on the impacts of your blood sugars, without diabetesā€¦. I remember I worked with an incredible client who had Type 1 diabetes and coeliac, she managed her diabetes incredibly well, and shockingly now the devices available are so advance.

But hereā€™s the bit I hate, the falseness that is being claimed in the marketing, the assumption that a rise in insulin is bad.

ITā€™S A NORMAL RESPONSE TO EATING šŸ½ļø

When you eat, you DO have a rise in insulin, which triggers GLUT-4 transporters to ā€œopen the doorsā€ and transport blood glucose from your blood stream to muscle surface and cell membrane.

This process is essential in clearing blood glucose, itā€™s healthy in a normal metabolically active person.

So why the fuck are we fearing it?

Just another area for people to obsess withā€¦.Whereā€™s your autonomy friends? Is it built in years of diet culture methods? Are your choices made for you, or made because youā€™ve been led to believe certain myths from false claims?

Next weā€™ll see claims people havenā€™t lost weight because their blood sugars are to blame.

Its ludicrous, and you know, makes health so much more complicated than it needs to be, it becomes so consuming, to the point where now people are unsure what to eat, how to eat, when to eat and how many fucking burpees to do for breakfast (none in case you were wondering)

How do you think our ancestors survived? How do you think we evolved? Forever obsessing about food and trying to change our bodies for the entirety of our lives? Seeking the next diet? Or eating for survival, for their health, for their wellbeing?

The vulnerabilities, the insecurities played on from these methods drives me insane, to the point I lost sleep last night thinking about writing this email, and now even typing it my rage is creeping in šŸ˜‚*Breathe Rebecca*

The Personalised Nutrition approach sold by Zoe, does to an extent sound like a dream, taking blood sugar measurements, poo samples, and other biological assessments to give you a personalised approach to what you should eatā€¦.

And I am not dismissing it completely, there is some rationale and validity to using this data, if you are say Type 1 Diabetic.

BUT it is not beneficial to an individual working towards a health focused goal.

A 2022 Systematic Review notes the following;

ā€œOverall current evidence did not show consistent benefits of personalised nutrition in improving behavioural or health outcomes over the current standard practise. Evidence also does not suggest improved compliance or quality of life resulting from personalised nutrition interventionsā€

Nutrition isnā€™t difficult but itā€™s made difficult by these methods, by our food environment, by stress levels, by emotional dysregulation.

You donā€™t need a personalised nutrition plan, rather working on your beliefs, behaviours, mindset and relationship with food, that investment will pay off so much more than a blood glucose monitor that stops you buying anything when youā€™re ravenous in a petrol stationā€¦.

The biggest changes do not come from food, They come from your mindset, your behaviours,

Be open minded when you are flooded with the ever growing exposure to these methods, and remember if any method tells you you must do something in order to get results, ask where your autonomy sits in thatā€¦

Health is wealth, look after it, nurture it and remember its here forever, your relationship with food isnā€™t meant to be perfect, itā€™s meant to be messy, changeable, adaptive and flexible ā¤ļø

You deserve a life no longer governed by food rules, and we can support you getting there, you can find out more information and sign up here šŸ‘‡
